They are inexpensive, easy to use, and will provide tasty nutritious meals for college students. They come in various sizes most commonly in four, five, and six quart capacity. Slow cookers (also referred to as crock pots) can also be used to warm up precooked food while the college student studies. Many students opt to eat out at inexpensive fast food restaurants where the food is usually not the healthiest and many of those students gain weight during their college years. College students are usually younger and typically do not have a lot of cooking experience. Rival slow cookers are easy to use for first time cooks with limited cooking skills, do not require fancy cookware and kitchen gadgets, and can provide nutritious and tasty meals.

Cooking with a crockpot requires basic culinary skills that any first time cooks will be able to handle. There are also many cookbooks that specialize in crockpot recipes; and most general cookbooks have a section with specific recipes for this type of cooking. You can also find hundreds of slow cooker recipes on the internet, on many different recipe and cooking websites.

Here is one example of a crock pot recipe that requires almost no culinary skills and tools except a basic pan to brown the meat and a can opener to open the vegetables. It is inexpensive to make, contains healthy ingredients, and once made, it can be stretched out to make several different tasty meals:

Crock Pot Turkey Chili

Brown turkey and then add 1/2 chili seasoning mix and one cup water and simmer for five minutes and put in crock pot. Add the tomatoes, beans, and the rest of the chili seasoning. Cook on low temperature for 4-6 hours. Turkey chili can be eaten alone, or topped with shredded cheese, and chopped onions. You can add it to chopped lettuce for a tasty taco salad, or can it be used to make chili dogs.

Avoid the 'freshman fifteen' and eat healthier food cooked in a slow cooker. They are easy to use, are inexpensive and make a great gift for the college student who is setting up their first household. Even college students on limited budgets can easily make inexpensive healthy meals in their slow cooker.
